Lizzie Marston
In some ways, Vicki Roberts is the average BRMHS sophomore. She worries about her grades and spends her free time horseback riding or on her skateboard. In other ways Vicki is not so average. Roberts’ heart can not be counted on to beat for itself.
At age fourteen, Roberts was diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome, a hereditary disorder that affects the heart’s electrical rhythm. When the heart contracts, it emits electrical signals, which can be measured using an electrocardiogram or ECG. The waves measured by the ECG are represented by the letters P, Q, R, S, and T. The Q-T interval represents the time it takes for the ventricle chambers in the heart to contract and release. If the cycle takes longer than normal to happen, it is called a prolonged Q-T interval.
The syndrome often goes undetected, even as a cause of death.
“I’ve had it since I was born, but I didn’t know about it until I was fourteen, I went to the emergency room when I thought I was having an Asthma attack.”said Roberts.
. LQTS is dangerous because it makes people with the syndrome susceptible to an arrhythmia, or abnormally high heart rate. When an arrhythmia occurs, heart muscles are not able to function correctly and blood fails to get to the brain.
“If LQTS goes untreated, your heart pace can get to die and cause an arrhythmia. You can die in your sleep.” said Roberts.
There are three categories of LQTS. Roberts falls into the third and most rare category
In October Roberts underwent her first surgery to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) inserted.
“It’s not like open heart surgery.”she said. The operation left only a small scar above Roberts’ heart. The ICD acts as a protection against an arrhythmia. If her heart starts acting irregularly it will kick in and correct her hearts rhythms.
“It basically makes your heart beat for you. I haven’t been shocked yet, but people who have say it feels like getting kicked in the chest.”
Because Long QT syndrome is hereditary, the discovery that Roberts had LQTS meant that her family was at risk too. The only complication, however, was the fact that Roberts had never met her biological family, Vicki was adopted without knowing them. Because Roberts’ adoption records were closed, Roberts and her mother feared that they would never be able to inform her biological family about the syndrome.
However, adoption records may be opened if an illness like LQTS is discovered. Upon reviewing the records, Roberts learned that her biological father and aunt had both died at young ages.
Roberts does not let her condition scare her. Her only frustrations are the limitations LQTS will put on her future.
“I was going to join the army but because of LQTS I can’t. It really takes out a lot of options for later in life.”
Meanwhile, Roberts continues to live her life as the average BRMHS student, fighting a not so average battle against her heart.

So my mom and I were driving to walgreens yesterday and she starts telling me this story. I thought it was pretty amusing.
(for starters...my mom hates huge suv's because the soccer mom's can't drive them and theyre always in the way)
She tells me that while she was stuck in traffic, she notices that this big SUV in front of her is called an armada. and then she asks me...Do you know what the armada is famous for?
and i said..."The spanish armada is famous for losing to the british." and then she says "But theyre famous for how they lost. Do you know why they lost?" and i said "Because they were so huge!"
So basically she pointed out that this big suv, the armada, is named after a fleet of boats that lost to the british because they were too big and cumbersome to fit through the english channel.
does anyone else think thats amusing?

For somereason, i had convinced myself that Englsih with wimbo my senior year wouldn't be that bad....AHHH....she's absolutley crazy. She gave us 2 days to write the bulk of our term paper!!! On of which i had to spend at the PRE MUN no one came to...so last night i had to write the whole thing.
i know i sound really whiny...but whatever. i never write papers in one sitting...thats so stressful. so its a piece of shit, but whatever. And then i have a physics 2 AP test today too...thats why i'm awake now...and on top of it all i have a spanish test 7th hour. Today is one of those days that just needs to be over. It's going to be such a relief.
So why do all of wimbos other classes get to turn their papers in monday? they all actually have a whole weekend to write their paper. And i would be like well at least i can forget ab it during the weekend, but our second rough draft is due when their first one is so i have to work on it this weekend too...blah.
and how pathetic is it that like 30 people came to pre mun. Come on guys, where were you? Its so depressing. MUN has been this huge deal all of the first three years of highschool and i finally get all excited ab it and involved and its nothing. We're working so hard, but its like it doesnt matter because there will probably be 3 people at the confrence. Betsy, Alen, and Daniel, b/c theyre the only people who managed to drag their asses to the meeting.

because for the last two weeks ive been the ONLY ONE in ballet class and its driving me insane.....
my new studio has like 2 people at it...i'm so sick of being the only one in class or having like one other person.
yay highschool facebook...does anyone else feel like gay college wanna be's? i think its funny that it doesnt have all the stuff college has, like college kids can be in an open relationship, but thats just not an option for high schoolers... :)

my schedule is really good. i got to drop calc BC and replaced it with stage craft...YAY! the hard classes i am taking are ones that im really interested in, spanish 3 AP and physics 2 AP. the only downfall is WIMBO...
so i really like school this year, being a senior is fun...but i miss steven :(
can't wait till friday!

yay summer!
i went to leah's today for a celebration....tons of food and swimming with the girls...it was a blast. :)
sarah and i finally had our cd burning party...she burned me like 10 cds...what a good friend. i got gavin and james taylor and fall out boy and ahh...im so excited.
we had a dance comp last weekend...last one of the year. my solo went really well...like i had such a good time doing it, i didnt really care about the outcome, but i got second over all which was realy exciting for me. the girl who got first was incredible.
anyway...recital is june 10th at the centroplex if anyone wants to come...just let me know b/c you have to have a ticket.

i havent really been doing the LJ thing lately....def. learned not to put anything in here that could incriminate me...
so yesterday i was looking at the picture from dinnerof everyone at prom...and you can go down the row and point out the people that are in trouble b/c of that night...and it's like half the table...amusing. being grounded sucked hardcore...im not good at being bad :) but the good news is i only have 4 more days left! yay! and my parents decided to let me go out last night which was really nice. i cleaned my entire house like hardcore and then i was upstairs and they were like elizabeth sue...come down here. we know what you did. os i freaked out and i was like shit...more trouble...and then they were like anywhere you want to go tonight? sweet. so me and steeeeeven went and saw that interpretor movie. it was pretty good...but the movie theater was like 90degrees and the lights were on? and the people next to me wre like al over each other. i hate it when people do that...
soo i just read leahs entry about how everyones freaking out about d.parker and such. i would be pleased to get an A...does that make me shallow? but i guess i dont know anything about how wonderful she is or whatever. goody melton all the way. i can just picture shela complaining about getting a 94 a though. amusing. leah and i went to church this morning like usual...and i was really excited like usual because i love my church so much. its the most amazing place and every sunday its filled with people who are passionate and who inspire me. but my fave is the pastor....so he decides to play hooky today and his father in law did the service. boooo. it reminded me of like a revival thingy...he yelled at us for an hour. that was his sermon. i hate that crap. anyway...he kept saying random stuff...something about a dry breast?
state social studies fair is tomorrow....woo. i really want to do well but people go like hardcore so i'm gonna work on it some mroe today. and i really need to get more prepared for the physics final, but stephen rhudd stole my calculator...
